Marinus Johannes (Marcel) van der Schans, born in 1966, obtained a Masters degree in Chemical Engineering at the Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands in 1992. From 1992 until 1996 he was employed at the Laboratory of Instrumental Analysis at the Eindhoven University of Technology, to study theory and methodological aspects on capillary electrophoresis of DNA. In 1997 he received his PhD degree.
Dr. Marcel van der Schans works for the TNO Defence, Security and Safety for almost 18 years now and has become an expert on (bio)analysis of chemical warfare agents and toxicokinetics of nerve agents. In 2011 he became principal investigator in the Detection Identification Monitoring (C-DIM) research area. He manages several research projects in testing and evaluating and developing novel chemical detection and identification systems. He is also responsible for reporting in the OPCW proficiency test and is identification leader in a quick response team for chemical incidents in the Netherlands.
