Dr Catherine Smallwood

Dr Catherine Smallwood is a Technical Officer for Outbreaks and Health Emergencies Cluster at the World Health Organization.Catherine originally trained in synthetic organic chemistry with a brief stint working in one of GlaxoSmithKline’s drug discovery departments. After graduating from SPRU with an MSc in ‘Science and Technology Policy’, Catherine completed her doctoral research on expert advice and the impact of technical change on the Chemical  Weapons Convention at the Harvard Sussex Program in 2009. Catherine then moved into the field of public health, and since 2010, has worked for the World Health Organization (WHO) where her responsibilities currently include emergency preparedness support to WHO Member States within the cluster for Outbreaks and Health Emergencies. During her time with WHO, Catherine has contributed to WHO actions in the management of risks associated with chemical weapons, and in the development of public health guidance related to such risks.
